The National Patient Safety Foundation's Research Grants Program

The National Patient Safety Foundation's Research Grants Program seeks to stimulate new, innovative projects directed toward enhancing patient safety in the United States. The program’s objective is to promote studies leading to the prevention of human errors, system errors, patient injuries, and the consequences of such adverse events in the health care setting.

Since 1998, the National Patient Safety Foundation Research Program has supported 39 research projects with nearly $3.9 million in grant funding. Many of these grants have been awarded to interdisciplinary teams to support research on diverse topics in areas such as medication errors, organizational design, and disclosure or communication issues.

The research program is highly regarded and known for fostering ideas from emerging leaders in the field. The research committee consists of a multidisciplinary team of distinguished representatives from academia, health care institutions, and public and private organizations. Annually they select several grant recipients to be awarded up to $100,000 each.

NPSF research funding is made possible in part by generous contributions from NPSF Board members through their support of the NPSF Board Grant. NPSF promotes co-sponsorship initiatives with other organizations in order to increase available funding for research. Support from organizations such as the American Medical Association, the Commonwealth Fund, and the Donaghue Foundation has enabled NPSF to enhance its ability to promote important advances in patient safety.

NPSF seeks to expand its partnerships in order to maintain and grow this important program which continues to provide new intelligence and innovation to the field.
