Pre-approved activities for CPPS Credit

There are many convenient ways to obtain credits towards your CPPS recertification. The Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety has pre-approved the programs listed here. You may also take advantage of other programs that relate to the content areas of the CPPS exam content outline, even if these programs have not been pre-approved by CBPPS.


If you are a provider interested in offering CPPS continuing education (CE) for your educational activity, we invite you to apply for approval by filling out the CPPS CE Approval Application below. Applications should be submitted at least six weeks prior to the activity date.

Fundamentals of Patient Safety – American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA)

Fundamentals of Patient Safety is an interactive, online CME course covering patient safety principles, reinforced with anesthesia-specific scenarios and examples. Case studies, quizzes and exercises within the course provide ample opportunity to apply patient safety concepts to the practice of anesthesiology. This course helps fulfill the patient safety CME requirement for Part 2 of the ABA MOCA®.

CPPS CE Credit: 10.0


ASHP / ISMP Medication Safety Certificate Program

Sixteen self-guided, online modules offering a total of 51 continuing education hours for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and pharmacy technicians. Participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and engage in efforts to minimize and eliminate the occurrence of medication errors. The curriculum covers fundamental principles of the medication use process and medication safety culture. The course presents strategies for identifying and implementing opportunities for medication safety improvements. After completing all of the modules, participants should be proficient in the fundamental concepts required for risk identification, medication error investigation, risk reduction, and general actions required to sustain safe medication practices in their practice settings.


To earn the optional professional certificate, participants must successfully analyze a case study, demonstrating understanding and application of knowledge obtained from the program.

NPSF Patient Safety Curriculum 2nd edition

The NPSF Patient Safety Curriculum is a comprehensive 10-module, self-paced, online course providing the learner with the context, key principles, and competencies associated with the discipline of patient safety. The curriculum takes the learner through the history of the patient safety movement, describes the science and disciplines used in this work, presents current best practices, and outlines strategies for overcoming barriers to safe care. This knowledge is imperative for those working in, or in partnership with, the health care system of today.

CPPS CE Credit: 10.0


CPPS Review Courses (live, online, and webinar)

The National Patient Safety Foundation offers review courses to experienced patient safety professionals who plan to take the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) examination. This course can help participants prepare for the exam by reviewing domain content areas and test-taking strategies.

Implementing RCA2: Lessons from the Trenches

While root cause analysis has been part of health care and patient safety for more than 15 years, success has been variable both within and across institutions. This module will review the process of Root Cause Analyses and Actions (RCA2) and its role in driving improvement in the process of reviewing events that cause or may cause serious harm, and in developing and implementing sustainable and measurable actions that prevent future harm to both patients and the workforce.

Patient Blood Management through the Lens of Patient Safety

While blood has played a central role in clinical practice for decades, the proof of safety and efficacy of blood transfusions remains ill-defined in comparison to other forms of medical and surgical interventions. This module will review the safety implications of blood transfusion and introduce the practice of Patient Blood Management.

Safe medication administration: Everything you need to know to improve your practice

Safety First Nursing, PLLC
Provides an overview of safe medication administration from a modern patient safety perspective, including the role of the nurse. Provides solutions and strategies for safer care.

Root Cause Analysis: The One Tool You Need to Improve Patient Safety

Safety First Nursing, PLLC
This course uses case studies with questions to teach the basics of Root Cause Analysis from multiple perspectives, including the history of RCA in aviation and healthcare.
