National Patient Safety Foundation Supported by AHRQ Launches Interactive Educational Web Site

Dec 15, 2004 ---(McLean, VA)-The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) is pleased to announce the launch of an interactive Web site containing three education modules focused on physicians (, nurses ( and patients ( This Web site was developed under a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to research and create a standard method of patient education to reach large audiences.
The physician’s module offers continuing medical education credits (CME); the nurse’s module offers continuing educational units (CEUs). These educational units are offered through the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The patient section of this educational Web site provides fundamental information to achieve safer patient care. Topics include medication safety, pediatric care, and medical device safety. There is also a module specifically addressing anesthesia patient safety.

“The safety of patients in healthcare settings is a national priority,” said William R. Hendee, Ph.D., principal investigator and founding NPSF Board Member and Senior Associate Dean and Vice-President of the Medical College of Wisconsin. “MCW is pleased to work with NPSF to provide educational materials to specific audiences through our online educational initiative.”

The National Patient Safety Foundation was awarded a three-year grant from the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in 2001 to develop this project. Design of the Web site and formatting of the modules was achieved by the Medical College of Wisconsin.

“NPSF appreciates AHRQ and the Medical College of Wisconsin’s support of this important initiative,” said Diane Pinakiewicz, NPSF Interim Executive Director and Board Member. “I also want to commend Dr. Hendee and his team for this successful effort.”
