Countdown Begins for the 8th Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress

During the week of March 5-11, 2006, communities across the country are hosting a variety of events and sponsoring initiatives as part of Patient Safety Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF).

Each year NPSF sponsors Patient Safety Awareness Week to encourage hospitals to actively engage their communities in patient safety activities and in all aspects of their healthcare. The 2006 theme, “Our Patients-Our Partners: One Team, One Goal,” emphasizes patient and family-centered care and promotes building partnerships between providers and patients, families, and advocates. The focus this year is on patients and providers finding ways in which to create effective, positive partnerships in mutual pursuit of safe patient care.

On the national level, NPSF has partnered with two agencies to raise public awareness about the role of patients and families in ensuring safe patient care. NPSF and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) are promoting safe medication use by offering tips on Medication Safety and encouraging patients to bring their medications when they see their doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. With Joint Commission Resources, Inc., NPSF is promoting three steps patients and families can take to fight the spread of infection.

The almost 400 Stand Up for Patient Safety hospitals and health systems, which are members of NPSF, will lead the way by celebrating Patient Safety Awareness Week. Hospitals, communities and organizations across the country are celebrating Patient Safety Awareness Week by holding special events for patients, families and healthcare providers.

“Patient Safety Awareness Week is a call to action for patients and healthcare providers to work together in their mutual pursuit of safe patient care,” said Diane C. Pinakiewicz, President, NPSF. “This is not only a time to look for new ways to collaborate, but to celebrate all of the essential work hospitals perform each and every day to keep patients safe.”

For specific activities happening in your local area or state, contact your local hospital, health system, regional hospital organization, or statewide hospital group or local patient and family advocacy groups.

NPSF Annual Patient Safety Congress Scheduled For May 10-12, 2006

Patient Safety Awareness Week begins the official “countdown” to the 8th Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress being held in San Francisco on May 10-12, 2006. During Leadership for Safety: The Time is Now, this year’s NPSF Congress, national and international health experts, as well as patient, family, and consumer representatives, share their expertise and experiences in making critical improvements that save lives and reduce harm to patients. The Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress is the only national meeting on patient safety that actively engages everyone in working to resolve the issue—patients and families, consumers, health care providers, administrators, employers, and physicians. Through more than 80 different sessions, participants learn about best practices, practical application of lessons learned, and tangible approaches to improving patient safety; the goal is for participants to leave the Congress ready to implement solutions.
