Program Supports Patient Safety Community, Education, and Professional Advancement

Boston, MA (Feb 13, 2013)—The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) recently launched an innovative patient safety program designed to enhance and grow patient safety knowledge and practice in hospitals and health systems nationwide. The Patient Safety Immersion Initiative integrates membership and education programs offered by NPSF with the patient safety certification introduced last year by the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety.

This multicomponent effort was crafted to generate spread and sustainability of foundational patient safety science, knowledge, and practice throughout health care facilities, systems, and networks, with an intended goal of meaningfully advancing the delivery of safe patient care.

Among the early adopters of the program are hospitals, health systems, and several of the Hospital Engagement Networks (HENs), which were created in December 2011 as an outgrowth of the Affordable Care Act and the Partnership for Patients

The Illinois Hospital Association (IHA), which encompasses 59 hospitals through its Hospital Engagement Network, has enrolled more than 220 individuals in the Patient Safety Immersion Initiative. “IHA was the first organization to leverage this unique program in partnership with NPSF, and we’re so pleased to see that other HENs are following suit and joining us in the initiative,” said Marie Cleary-Fishman, vice president for performance improvement at IHA.

The Patient Safety Immersion Initiative includes a one-year membership in the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety; access to the NPSF online CE/CME-accredited Patient Safety Curriculum; and, through the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety, registration for the Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) credentialing exam, which validates standards for patient safety proficiency.
