Leaders in Patient Safety Join NPSF Governing Boards

Appointments to Foundation’s Board of Directors and Board of Governors Take Effect July 1.

Boston, MA (June 19, 2014)— The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) has announced new appointments to the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Board of Governors, effective July 1.


Newly appointed to the NPSF Board of Governors are Beth Daley Ullem, MBA, patient advocate and member of the Board of Directors of ThedaCare and of the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin; Barbara Edson, RN, MBA, MHA, vice president of clinical quality, Health Research & Educational  Trust, American Hospital Association; Rollin J. “Terry” Fairbanks, MD, MS, FACEP,  CPPS, director of the National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare and of the Simulation Training and Education Lab, MedStar Health, and associate professor of emergency medicine at Georgetown University; Karen Frush, MD, FAAP, CPPS, chief patient safety officer, Duke University Health System, and vice president, quality, LifePoint Hospitals; and Mark E. Reynolds, president of CRICO, the Risk Management Foundation of the Harvard Medical Institutions.


“We are extremely honored to welcome these new board members, who bring a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds, but who all share a commitment to advancing the cause of safer patient care,” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president of NPSF.


Assuming different roles in the Foundation’s governance are Jane Englebright, PhD, RN, and Sam R. Watson, MSA, MT (ASCP), CPPS, who have been appointed to chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Board of Governors. Gregg Meyer, MD, MSc, and Mary Beth Navarra-Sirio, MBA, RN, are the new chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Board of Directors. Gerald Hickson, MD, remains on the Board of Directors as immediate past chair. Saul Weingart, MD, PhD, CPPS, formerly chair of the Board of Governors, joins the Board of Directors.


The NPSF Board of Directors provides strategic and operational oversight and is vested with fiduciary responsibilities for the Foundation. The Board of Governors offers advisory direction and insight on NPSF program development, in keeping with the Foundation’s mission.
