Part of Appropriate Use of Medical Resources Initiative to Guide Health Care Providers

by Megan Zhang
Health care providers aim to administer the most appropriate care and treatment for each patient’s individual case, but oftentimes, not enough discussion occurs with patients about what approaches would be most appropriate.

In 2013, the American Hospital Association considered this issue and released the paper Appropriate Use of Medical Resources in an effort to encourage health care providers to make informed decisions about treatment plans in partnership with their patients. With guidance from AHA’s Committee on Clinical Leadership, the paper also recommends methods of diminishing non-beneficial services and improving health care overall.

To demonstrate additional support for hospitals, the AHA is compiling a series of toolkits, with the latest one focusing on antimicrobial stewardship. Antibiotics can be lifesaving when appropriately used. Unfortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that half of the antibiotic prescriptions written today are either unnecessary or are used inappropriately. The AHA’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkit is provided to help health systems and hospitals create antimicrobial stewardship programs in their organizations to ensure more appropriate use of antibiotics.

The toolkit includes helpful resources from a variety of organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). View or download the Antimicrobial Stewardship Toolkit.
