Update Incorporates Latest Evidence and Techniques

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has updated its successful TeamSTEPPS® curriculum. Originally developed by AHRQ and the Department of Defense in 2006, the goal of TeamSTEPPS is to reduce harm to patients by giving clinical teams practical tools they can use to improve their safety culture and keep patients safer. It draws on core competencies that have been proven effective in other high-risk industries, like the military and aviation.

TeamSTEPPS 2.0 includes several significant changes:

A Measurement module has been added that provides information about how to measure the impact of TeamSTEPPS and the available tools to support evaluation.
The Communication module has been moved up in the order of instruction to better align with the emphasis of communication errors within teamwork.
The Course Management Guide has been updated to include TeamSTEPPS modules and versions that have been added for the user’s reference.
Thousands of health care organizations have used the curriculum to build the foundation for a culture of safety, making care safer and the implementation of other hospital safety initiatives easier. Now, it has undergone a complete revision, adapting the latest evidence and techniques.

The curriculum is available online and in DVD format and includes PowerPoint presentations, teaching modules, and video vignettes that can be used to train staff. To access TeamSTEPPS 2.0 materials, please visit To order copies of the DVD, contact the AHRQ Publications Clearinghouse at or call (800) 358-9295.
