New Institute named in honor of renowned patient safety expert

National Patient Safety Foundation Hosts 9th Annual Congress May 2-4, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

May 3, 2007 – The creation of the new Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) was announced today at NPSF’s Annual Patient Safety Congress in Washington, DC. Dr. Lucian Leape is a physician and Adjunct Professor of Health Policy at the Harvard School of Public Health, and is internationally recognized as a founder and leader of the patient safety movement. The National Patient Safety Foundation’s Annual Patient Safety Congress is the field’s preeminent meeting on patient safety, bringing experts, practitioners, patients and other stakeholders together to share new strategies, research and knowledge focused on improving the safety of the healthcare system.

The Lucian Leape Institute will function as a think tank and define strategic paths and calls to action for the field of patient safety, intended to provide vision and context for the many efforts underway within the health care system. Through its Roundtables, it will issue reports that will guide the work of the field and challenge the system to address the issues critical to making the system safer.

“The National Patient Safety Foundation has been honored to work with Dr. Leape since our founding, and we are pleased to be able to recognize his leadership in the field through the establishment of this Institute,” says Diane C. Pinakiewicz, President, NPSF. “The work of the Institute will provide important guidance for the many improvement efforts underway in the field.”
