ASPPS members in new roles on NPSF governing boards

Boston, MA (January 13, 2014)—The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) has announced new appointments to the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Board of Governors.

Rick Boothman, JD, chief risk officer, University of Michigan Health System, and Helen Haskell, MA, president, Mothers Against Medical Error, have been appointed to the NPSF Board of Directors for a term of three years. Both previously served on the NPSF Board of Governors.

Newly appointed to the NPSF Board of Governors are Sam R. Watson, MSA, CPPS, MT (ASCP), senior vice president, patient safety & quality, Michigan Health & Hospital Association, and executive director, MHA Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality; and Robert J. White, president, Respiratory & Monitoring Solutions, Covidien. Both have been appointed for a term of two years.

Assuming different roles in the Foundation’s governance are Linda K. Kenney, president and executive director, Medically Induced Trauma Support Services, and Barbara Youngberg, JD, visiting professor of law, Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Both recently accepted appointments to the NPSF Board of Governors after serving a number of years on the Board of Directors.

“We are honored to welcome new members to the Board of Directors and Governors and extremely grateful to the other distinguished health care leaders who continue their service to the Foundation,” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president of NPSF “Each brings valuable perspectives and a strong commitment to patient safety that will prove essential as we shape new initiatives to advance our mission.”

The NPSF Board of Directors provides strategic and operational oversight and is vested with fiduciary responsibilities for the Foundation. The Board of Governors offers advisory direction and insight on NPSF program development, in keeping with the Foundation’s mission.

“Our new Board of Directors and Board of Governors colleagues will bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a diverse set of experience and skills to our vision to create a world where patients and those who care for them are free from harm,” said Board Chair Gerald Hickson, MD, Senior Vice President for Quality, Safety and Risk Prevention and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
