The Institute for Healthcare Improvement and NPSF merged into one organization in May 1, 2017, under the name Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Together, we are combining our knowledge and resources to focus and energize the patient safety agenda in order to build systems of safety across the continuum of care. Please also visit

For 19 years, the annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress has been
the hallmark of our educational programs.

The National Patient Safety Foundation’s vision is to create a world where patients and those who care for them are free from harm. A central voice for patient safety since 1997, NPSF partners with patients and families, the health care community, and key stakeholders to advance patient safety and health care workforce safety and disseminate strategies to prevent harm. Committed to a collaborative approach in all that it does, the Foundation offers a portfolio of programs targeted to diverse stakeholders across the health care industry. We invite you to explore our programs and offerings.

Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship - awarded through joint sponsorship by NPSF and the American Hospital Association to encourage leadership in the patient safety field by providing health care professionals an opportunity to integrate innovative strategies within their own organizations.

Please note: As of May 2015, the Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship has been suspended. The National Patient Safety Foundation is looking at suitable ways to support this fellowship in the future with the intention of adding a new venture to an already rich legacy.

If you would like your name to be added to a contact list for future opportunities and updates, please send an e-mail to Patricia McGaffigan.
