An overreliance on prescribing opioid-derived painkillers is believed to have contributed to the most recent spike in addiction and overdose deaths in the US. In response, health systems are seeking ways to redesign systems and processes to guide medical practitioners away from automatically prescribing drugs like Oxycontin, Vicodin, and Percocet to their patients for acute pain, unless necessary. And, even then, for just short periods of time.

Our WIHI guests all agree that health care needs to create safer processes for a patient population that is becoming more aware of the risks of opioids, more realistic about their ability to tolerate some pain, and more open to non-opioid remedies for pain management. We invite you to join the May 30 WIHI to learn how to enrich engagements with patients and sharpen acute pain management strategies in your health system.
