News Alert – Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress

This month something exciting is happening in Nashville. Experts and stakeholders from across the healthcare field will be gathering at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center for the 2008 National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) Annual Patient Safety Congress. NPSF has been hosting this annual conference for over ten years to bring the full spectrum of stakeholders together in order to share new knowledge and tools for improving the safety of our healthcare system. Participants and presenters at Congress represent stakeholders from across the health care system and around the world, from patient and family representatives through hospital trustees and policy makers.
NPSF is expecting 1500 participants to gather in Nashville to discuss the latest advancements in patient safety from the most notable experts in the field, as well as individuals and teams who are doing the work at the front lines. As a member of the media industry, you are already aware of the fact that patient safety affects all of us and has received notable attention from the press. The NPSF has been singularly focused on this issue since 1997 and has been instrumental in raising awareness, creating new knowledge, convening, educating, and providing tools for use across the many sectors whose engagement is necessary to the work. The annual Congress is a cornerstone of NPSF’s work and the pre-eminent meeting in the field.
The theme of this year’s Congress is Connect, Communicate, Commit, emphasizing that, in order for sustainable improvements in patient safety to be made, stakeholders from across health care must make connections, communicate effectively, and commit resources to enacting change. Over the course of three days (May 14, 15, and 16) the meeting will generate a number of newsworthy feature options. On May 14, NPSF is launching a new pre-Congress program on Community Engagement from the Patient and Safety Perspective. The program will educate community members on the issues that concern healthcare providers as well as providing an opportunity for providers to learn directly from patient and family representatives, who will teach sections of the course using techniques they have found useful in their own experiences.
On Thursday, May 15, Michael Barry, MD, and Floyd Fowler, PhD, will present research findings from the first national study on the quality of medical decision making in the US at a plenary entitled Through the Eyes of the Patient, which will include patient perspectives on the quality and safety implications of medical decision making. That afternoon, the founding members of the new Lucian Leape Institute at NPSF will present a plenary entitled Transforming Concepts for Patient Safety, the inaugural paper that will provide focus for the Institute’s work as it crafts a strategic vision for the field. Institute Members include Lucian Leape, MD, David Lawrence, MD, Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, Carolyn Clancy, MD, Dennis O’Leary, MD, Julianne Morath, RN, MS, and James Conway, MAM, CHE. On Friday the 16th, A Whole New Mind, the inspiring plenary presented by best-selling author David Pink will draw from his best-selling book of the same name as he discusses right and left brain thinking and his premise that the future belongs to people like artists, inventors, storytellers, and caregivers. Later that afternoon a group of experts including Amy C. Edmondson, PhD, and Sandra Fenwick, will dialogue in a plenary entitled How Leaders Influence Learning, Collaboration and Innovation, a critical issue for patient safety work.
