National Patient Safety Foundation Earns Multiple Awards

CHICAGO — The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) announced today receipt of three prestigious awards for excellence in writing and video content and production. The first annual Nursing Econonmic$/Margaret Sovie Writer’s Award was given in recognition of NPSF’s outstanding contributions to the “Patient Safety” series in the Nursing Economic$ journal. NPSF’s training video, Patient Safety: A Critical Issue earned two awards – the Platinum Best of Show Aurora Award, granted for creativity, message effectiveness, and technical excellence, and the Aegis Award for superior quality in production. “We are extremely proud of the national recognition we have received from these awards,” said Carol Ley, MD, Board Chair of NPSF. “These three honors reflect the success of the Foundation in furthering the cause of patient safety to a wide variety of audiences.”
The Writer’s Award was presented to NPSF because its series of editorials best exemplified Nursing Economic$’ mission to advance nursing leadership in health care by providing information and thoughtful analyses of current and emerging best practices in health care management, economics and policymaking. The series of articles were published in issues of Nursing Economic$ in 2002 and 2003. Titles were:

“Patient Safety: A Critical Issue,” a 20-minute video training program for healthcare staff education, won two awards, the Platinum Best of Show Aurora Award and an Aegis Award. Created with a grant from 3M Corporation and produced in partnership with Envision Inc. and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC), this video covers the guidelines of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which mandate that all healthcare facilities make patient safety a top priority.
This educational video includes commentary from highly respected professionals in the healthcare field, including Donald J. Palmisano, MD, JD, President, American Medical Association, and NPSF Board Member; Mary Foley, MS, RN, Immediate Past President , American Nurses Association, and NPSF Board Member; David R. Page, President and CEO, Fairview Health Services, and NPSF Board Member; Robert E. Krawisz, Executive Director, NPSF; William W. Stead, MD, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, Vanderbilt University Medical Center; John A. Jernigan, MD, MS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Sue Dill Calloway, RN, MSN, JD, Vice President of Legal Services, Memorial Hospital of Union County.
The Platinum Best of Show is the highest honor given in the Aurora Awards, which recognize excellence in film and video through international competition. Judging is performed by panels of film and video professionals and looks at technical aspects, writing and creativity. The Aegis Awards recognize excellence the video industry and are judged on production elements. “We are happy to accept these awards in recognition of NPSF’s efforts to further the cause of patient safety,” said Robert E. Krawisz, Executive Director of NPSF.
