National Patient Safety Foundation

The National Patient Safety Foundation’s vision is to create a world where patients and those who care for them are free from harm. A central voice for patient safety since 1997, NPSF partners with patients and families, the health care community, and key stakeholders to advance patient safety and health care workforce safety and disseminate strategies to prevent harm. NPSF is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Senior Director, Development and Alliance Management

The Senior Director, Development and Alliance Management is responsible for supporting and growing an incremental avenue of funding for the nonprofit National Patient Safety Foundation, identifying and forging new relationships and creating visibility to support philanthropic funding/major gifts and individual giving goals. Also key to this role is engagement in the management and growth of select existing NPSF programs and relationships.

The Senior Director, Development and Alliance Management will report to the Senior Vice President of Strategic Alliances and, as is requisite for all team members at this small but vocal nonprofit organization, will have responsibilities ranging from strategic to hands-on tactical.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direction for philanthropic giving solicitations, a new initiative to support the mission of the Foundation
  • Support SVP of Strategic Alliances with management of existing program-based activities and relationships; assist with program growth
  • In partnership with NPSF leadership, design and implement a comprehensive, multi-year strategic plan for developing and cultivating relationships and accomplishing target activities and revenue goals
  • Research, identify, and pursue new opportunities, build segment and prospecting lists; establish new and diverse donor base and pipeline; present activities and status to the NPSF Management Team
  • Create outreach, follow-up, and relationship management mechanisms (including management and maintenance of program database)
  • Partner with NPSF communications team to create and deploy impactful and action-driven messaging designed to generate visibility and engagement, successfully positioning NPSF to new audiences
  • Build and manage new relationships, driving both one-time and recurring support for the Foundation; provide stewardship aimed at cultivating deep ties with donor portfolio
  • Prepare and write proposals
  • Understand and report on funding trends
  • Seek out new grant opportunities; prepare and submit funding requests
  •  Ability to meet quarterly and annual goals

Position Qualifications

  • Proven ability to identify, build, and cultivate donor relationships and generate funding for nonprofit organization
  • Relationship development and management skills
  • Ability to work in a small, high-energy organization; a team player willing to take on new challenges and who demonstrates capacity to perform well on both a strategic and tactical level
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills; able to manage and deliver on multiple responsibilities
  • Provides timely and well-articulated status reports and is proactive in advising leadership
  • Exhibits a high level of integrity; understands and embraces not-for-profit mission and mindset

Education Requirements and Credentials 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Masters preferred but not required

Professional Experience

  • Track record of successful major solicitations and relationship building
  • Minimum 5 years tangible experience and proven development successes in a non-profit environment, preferably in the healthcare sector

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience with database management
  • Maintenance of skill levels, knowledge, and mastery of technology required to perform

Language and Communications Skills

  • Superior, persuasive, and proven writing capabilities
  • Strong verbal and presentation capabilities
  • Proactive, self-directed, confident, flexible, resourceful, and enthusiastic

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to adapt well to diverse situations and constituencies

Physical and Practical Requirements

  • Mobility to allow access to all parts of the office
  • Ability to communicate by phone and computer
  • Ability to travel as needed
