Robert M. Wachter, MD, is the 2004 recipient of the John M. Eisenberg Award, America’s top honor in patient safety. In 2010, Modern Healthcare magazine named him the 10th most influential physician-executive in the US and one of the 100 most powerful people in health care.

Dr. Wachter coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996, and is generally considered the “father” of the hospitalist field, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern American medicine. He has authored more than 200 articles and 6 books, including Understanding Patient Safety (McGraw-Hill, 2nd Edition 2012) and Internal Bleeding: The Truth Behind America’s Terrifying Epidemic of Medical Mistakes, and he edits the US federal government’s two leading websites on safety (together, they receive a million visits each year).

As Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Wachter directs the 50-physician Division of Hospital Medicine. He is chair-elect of the American Board of Internal Medicine, has served on the health care advisory boards of several companies, including Google, and as a member of the Board of Governors at the National Patient Safety Foundation. His blog, www.wachtersworld.org, is one of the nation’s most popular health care blogs. In 2011, he was a Fulbright Scholar, studying patient safety and hospital medicine at Imperial College London.
