2017 National Patient Safety Foundation Annual Congress

2017 Breakout Tracks

 

The track topics for the 2017 NPSF Patient Safety Congress were developed through a series of planning calls, an analysis of survey feedback, and input from our Board and Planning Committee members. The breakout sessions for the 2017 Congress will be organized around the following topics and can include examples from across the entire health care continuum.

  1. Advancing Safety Science
    Topics could include:
    • New and emerging practices
    • High reliability, lean, six sigma
    • Root cause analysis and action
    • Human factors
    • Culture and using culture survey data
    • Reduction of health care associated harm

  2. Beyond Hospital Walls
    Topics could include:
    • Transitions/coordination of care
    • Infections
    • Diagnostic error
    • Test results
    • Referral management
    • Medical/surgical home
    • Vulnerable populations
    • End of life care
    • Skilled nursing, rehab, and home health

  3. Caring for the Caregiver 
    Topics could include:
    • Second victim
    • Managing disruptive behavior
    • Building resiliency and reducing burnout
    • Respect in the workplace
    • Workforce safety (physical and psychological)

  4. Culture of Safety in the Workplace
    Topics could include:
    • Just culture
    • Transparency
    • Building trust
    • Accountability
    • Communication
    • Reporting and feedback
    • Psychological Safety
    • Leadership
    • Employee Satisfaction

  5. Innovative Technology
    Topics could include:
    • Optimizing alarms, alerting, and/or decision support
    • Advances in patient safety technology/new innovations
    • Remote care technology, virtual care
    • Identifying and mitigating unintended consequences of technology
    • Successful deployment of technologies that improve safety
    • Health information technology
    • Transitions of care across the information technology continuum

  6. Medication Safety across the Continuum
    Topics could include:
    • Best practices in medication safety
    • New emerging issues and innovations in medication safety
    • Medication safety monitoring and risk assessment
    • Medication adherence
    • Medication reconciliation
