Barbara J. Youngberg, BSN, MSW, JD

Barbara J. Youngberg, BSN, MSW, JD, and FASHRM-certified mediator, is the co-editor of The Patient Safety Handbook, a text often used to educate others about patient safety (second edition 2012). She has authored six books and more than 25 articles on quality, safety and risk management, and she speaks both nationally and internationally on these subjects to educate others seeking to enter the field of patient safety, risk management or quality.

Ms. Youngberg is Academic Director, Online Education, Senior Lecturer in Residence at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy. She has more than 25 years of experience in health care, including clinical experience in adult and pediatric critical care, trauma and ED. As a new lawyer, she also managed medical malpractice claims for hospitals and individual physicians. In her role as VP of Insurance, Risk, Quality and Legal Services at University HealthSystem Consortium, she co-developed a web-based event reporting system for actual and near- miss events with a common taxonomy for error classification. The system is now in use in over 100 hospitals and has collected more than one million events.

Ms. Youngberg is a former member of the Board of Directors and Board of Governors at the National Patient Safety Foundation and a faculty member of the Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship Program. She has also co-chaired the annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress on several occasions.
