Patient Safety 101

Program Overview

The overall purpose of this course is to provide front line, middle management, and top leadership staff who are “new” to patient safety with,

  • a solid overview about the background/foundations of patient safety along with,
  • brief introductions to various approaches/techniques for detecting and reducing adverse events, and
exposure to nationally recognized patient safety organizations and patient safety resourcesThe content will be relayed through didactic presentation, small and large group discussion, simulation, and storytelling.  Each participant will receive a notebook with all course materials, along with a CD including all presentations.  

At the conclusion of this presentation,
participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of patient safety science (e.g., scope of the problem, lessons from high reliability organizations, etc.).
  • Understand the basic principles of human factors engineering, and how it affects patient safety.
  • Gain familiarity with various patient safety approaches/techniques and their applicability.
  • Know where to get additional information about patient safety in general and various approaches/techniques for patient safety.
  • Develop corrective actions to prevent or reduce the impact of adverse events.
