Stand Up Member Bellevue Hospital Center, a member of NYC Health + Hospitals Health Care System, is celebrating the 280th anniversary of its founding, making it the oldest hospital in America. Established in 1736 – just four years after the birth of George Washington and 40 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence – it first operated as a six-bed infirmary on the second floor of the New York City Almshouse. Over the years, Bellevue has grown and contributed to numerous innovations in medical science and medical education as well as the advancement of public health. Learn more and view historic photos.
