Annual Forum and Keynote Dinner to Address Leadership and Transparency in Health Care

Boston, MA, September 8, 2015—The National Patient Safety Foundation’s Lucian Leape Institute has announced the speakers and agenda for its 8th annual Forum and Keynote Dinner to be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in Boston.

The afternoon forum will examine the need for greater transparency in health care, particularly as it contributes to safer care. Earlier this year the Institute published a report calling for greater transparency between patients and health professionals, among health professionals, between organizations, and with the public, and the forum will feature insight into how transparency looks in practice.

Guest speaker Darrell A. (Skip) Campbell, Jr., MD, director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), will focus on the key role of leadership in creating transparency and how statewide collaboratives such as MSQC are helping to improve quality and safety. Attendees will also participate in breakout sessions led by Institute members and focusing on how to put the report’s recommendations into practice. The afternoon will close with a panel discussion on communication, apology, and resolution following medical harm, featuring speakers affiliated with the Massachusetts Coalition for Communication and Resolution following Medical Injury.

“We are very excited about this year’s program and the experts we have lined up to help us advance the discussion about transparency,” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president and CEO of the National Patient Safety Foundation and of the Institute. “We are expecting a record-breaking number of attendees, which testifies to the interest in the themes that the Institute has been addressing.”

A networking reception will begin the evening program, followed by dinner and a keynote address entitled “To Care Is Human” by Jonathan Perlin, MD, PhD, MSHA, FACP, FACMI. Dr. Perlin is president, clinical services, and chief medical officer at Hospital Corporation of America and current chair of the American Hospital Association.

“Our hope is that attendees of this program will come away with not only important information to think about and share, but also some tactics that they can use in their own organizations that may lead to greater openness and, ultimately, better, safer care,” said Gary S. Kaplan, MD, FACMPE, chairman and CEO, Virginia Mason Health System, who was named chair of the Institute earlier this year.

The NPSF Lucian Leape Institute is named for Dr. Lucian Leape, adjunct professor of health policy, Harvard School of Public Health, and a renowned leader of the patient safety movement. This annual event is an opportunity for Institute members to share their insights while hearing the perspectives of clinicians, leaders, and other attendees representing health care organizations and industry partners.

Individual tickets to the event are available at a cost of $275 each. For further details of the agenda and how to reserve your seat, visit the website. For information about supporting the work of the Leape Institute, contact David Coletta at dcoletta@npsf.org.
