Roundtable and Open Discussions Held in Conjunction with Inaugural Gala

February 8, 2008 – The Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation held its first Roundtable meeting and Inaugural Gala February 7-8, 2008 at the Westin Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts.  The Institute, established by NPSF in May 2007, is a think tank charged with defining strategic paths and calls to action for the field of patient safety.  Its goal is to provide vision and context for the many safety-related efforts already underway within the healthcare system and to call for system-level changes necessary to accelerate the work.  Its Founding Members include Dr. Leape, Dr. David Lawrence, Julianne Morath, Dr. Donald Berwick, Dr. Carolyn Clancy, James Conway and Dr. Dennis O’Leary, all of whom are renowned leaders in the patient safety field.

The first Roundtable was held on February 7 and was focused on further development of the Institute’s inaugural report on transformational concepts for the field.  Following the formal Roundtable session, the Founding Members facilitated five separate Open Discussions on February 8 with more than 300 attendees to share their perspectives and provide their input to the work.  The five areas of discussion addressed included Health Professions Education; Consumer Involvement; Integrating Healthcare Organizations; Transparency; and Joy and Meaning in Work. The final report summarizing the Roundtable and the Open Discussions will be presented at NPSF’s annual Congress in May.

To celebrate the establishment of the Institute and the beginning of its work, the Institute also hosted its Inaugural Gala on the evening of February 8, following the conclusion of the first Roundtable and the Open Discussions.  Nearly 400 attendees enjoyed a festive evening feting Dr. Leape and acknowledging his accomplishments and the contributions of all the Founding Members of the Institute.

Leadership Sponsors Hospira and McKesson provided support for the Open Discussions and the Gala.  More than thirty organizations and individuals pledged their support by becoming sponsors of the event, with all proceeds from the evening providing funding for the work of the Institute.

Dr. Paul Gluck, Chair, NPSF Board of Directors and Gala host, confirmed the excitement surrounding the event, “The Institute bearing Lucian’s name is a tribute to his lifetime accomplishments and work.  The inaugural events held are a first new step in bringing patient safety to the next level.”
