Session 102: On the Road to Creating Joy and Meaning of Work: Managing Disruptive Behavior

Marlene Dacken RN, MSN, Patient Safety Officer, Woodhull North Brooklyn Health Network

Mei Kong RN, MSN, Assistant Vice President, Corporate Patient Safety and Employee Safety, NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation

Joy and Meaning in the Workplace is inextricably linked to patient safety. Managing disruptive behavior is a precursor to creating Joy, Meaning and Safer Health Care.  In response to growing concern over the impact of disruptive behavior on patient safety, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) took the lead to address disruptive behavior corporate-wide.  Over an 11 month period we examined the prevalence of disruptive behavior at one HHC facility and discovered that it was more widespread than previous data indicated. During this session, we will take you through our journey and share strategies and solutions that will bring back workplace safety and move us further in engaging the workforce to create joy and meaning in the workplace.

Upon completing this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Define Disruptive Behavior
  • Identify Triggers to Disruptive Behavior
  • List the Effects of Disruptive Behavior to Patient Safety
  • Identify Tools and Strategies to address Disruptive Behaviors
  • Discuss two (2) real case scenarios
  • Identify take away strategies to implement in participants’ own facility
