NPSF Online Patient Safety Curriculum Accepted for Maintenance of CJCP® Certification

Program accepted as continuing education for Certified Joint Commission Professionals
Boston, MA, October 7, 2014—TheNPSF Online Patient Safety Curriculum, a 10-module, self-paced educational program, has been reviewed and accepted by Joint Commission Resources (JCR) as a continuing education activity in support of maintenance of the Certified Joint Commission Professional (CJCP®) credential.
Joint Commission Resources, which oversees the CJCP credentialing program, is an affiliate of The Joint Commission, a not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations in the United States. The Joint Commission sets rigorous quality and safety standards for a variety of health settings and conducts periodic surveys to ensure that the standards are being met.
Currently, there are 205 individuals holding the CJCP credential who have a proven understanding of Joint Commission hospital accreditation standards and the survey process. Similar to other certification programs, the CJCP program requires professionals to participate in continuing education activities in order to maintain their certification. CJCPs must obtain 30 hours of continuing education within a three-year period, with 20 hours derived from education activities provided by Joint Commission Resources. The remaining 10 hours may now be acquired through other approved education activities. The NPSF Online Patient Safety Curriculum was accepted by JCR for 10.0 hours toward CJCP recertification. Credit hours will be awarded only to those who have achieved this certification. Hours will not be awarded retroactively.

The committee determined the NPSF Online Patient Safety Curriculum meets the very specific educational requirements of our program,” said Cathy Hinckley, PhD, executive director, Publications & Education, Joint Commission Resources. “We are pleased that Certified Joint Commission Professionals will have this option for continuing education as they plan for maintenance of their certification credential.”
The NPSF Curriculum is intended to equip learners with the foundational knowledge necessary to understand the context, key principles, and competencies associated with the discipline of patient safety and how these tenets and skills are applied in everyday practice. The program provides background and essential knowledge about the science of patient safety; systems thinking and design; measurement and outcomes; risk management; policy and regulatory matters; and other relevant topics. The content includes lectures and presentations by a distinguished and multidisciplinary faculty. More than a thousand health professionals from a diverse range of disciplines have participated in the NPSF Curriculum since it was introduced in 2012.
