Julianne Morath, RN, MS

Julianne Morath, RN, MS, the inaugural recipient of the John M. Eisenberg Award for Individual Lifetime Achievement in Patient Safety, is an internationally recognized authority on patient safety with decades of experience in health care executive leadership.

Ms. Morath has authored two books, The Quality Advantage and To Do No Harm, and has published widely on topics of quality, patient safety, leadership and patient/family engagement.  She is a frequent speaker and consultant within the United States and internationally, including Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Ms. Morath’s work in patient safety has been featured on the cover of U.S. News & World Report and has been the focus of two Harvard Business School case studies in Leadership.

Ms. Morath completed three terms (9 years) on the Board of the National Patient Safety Foundation and is currently a distinguished advisor and founding member of the Lucian Leape Institute. She is an elected member of the Board of Commissioners of The Joint Commission and past member of the National Quality Forum Best Practices Committee. She was a participant-observer in the Harvard Executive Sessions on Medical Error and appointed Fellow to the Salzburg Seminars on Patient Safety. She co-facilitated the Minnesota Executive Session on Patient Safety and helped launch “Safest in America,” a patient safety collaborative. She is a judge in the CLARION Case Competitions, and has chaired conferences in Patient Safety for the National Institute for Children’s Healthcare Quality, the Child Health Corporation of America, and the National Patient Safety Foundation.

Ms. Morath has three decades of experience in executive leadership in health care and has held multiple faculty appointments, including the University of Cincinnati, University of Rhode Island, Brown University, University of Minnesota, and Vanderbilt University. She is currently Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Director of the Center for Clinical Improvement, and Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing.  She is a member of the Board of Virginia Mason Medical Center and Health System, an elected member of the Board of Commissioners for The Joint Commission, and Chairperson of the National Nursing Advisory Committee.
