NPSF: WHO WE ARE

The National Patient Safety Foundation is an independent not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has been diligently pursuing one mission since its founding in 1997 – improving the safety of our healthcare system. Almost a decade later, NPSF remains the sole organization in the field with this singular focus.

NPSF also occupies a unique position in this field by virtue of its inclusive, multi-stakeholder approach. From the composition of its Board to the structure of its programs, NPSF fosters collaboration on the issue of patient safety.

Stand Up for Patient Safety

Membership in Stand Up provides a meaningful way for organizations to participate in the patient safety movement and demonstrates a commitment to patient safety both within the organization and among their communities. The program provides timely and important information on patient safety implementation strategies, along with practical tools to facilitate the incorporation of patient safety into the hospital culture and enhance existing safety and quality programs.

Built on the principle that partnership is fundamental to the development and continued strength of a patient safety culture, the program seeks to facilitate partnership among all levels of an organization and all groups involved in patient care. Program materials and resources are designed to engage and actively involve the full spectrum of healthcare stakeholders. A teamwork approach is encouraged by providing coordinated implementation materials tailored to specific audiences - administration, trustees, clinical staff, patients and families, and communities. The need for partnership between healthcare providers and patients and families is emphasized by materials specifically targeted at engaging patients as active participants in the healthcare process.

Recognizing the need for organizations to be able to collaborate with each other and share information, Stand Up provides members a forum to discuss approaches and strategies, pose questions, and exchange information on best practices. Whether by participation in the audio-web conferences, attendance at the NPSF Annual Patient Safety Congress, or use of the Stand Up password-protected website, members are afforded the opportunity to communicate and stay abreast of the latest developments in patient safety.

Whether your organization is in the process of implementing new patient safety initiatives or seeking to bolster existing programs, Stand Up offers the tools, theory and partnership to help to achieve these goals.

The Stand Up for Patient Safety program was launched in 2002 by 16 Founding members. Since then the Stand Up for Patient Safety Program has grown to include more than 400 healthcare organizations.
