NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS, June 19, 2008 — The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) today announced the appointment of three officers to the Foundation’s Board of Directors, including new chair Pamela Thompson, MS, RN, FAAN, vice chair Gary Kaplan, MD, FACP, FACMPE, FACPE, and secretary Charles Benda, PhD, CPCU, ARM.  The Board of Directors provides strategic and operational oversight and is vested with the Foundation’s fiduciary responsibilities.

The Stand Up for Patient Safety Management Award is granted to a member hospital of the National Patient Safety Foundation’s Stand Up program in recognition of the successful implementation of an outstanding patient safety initiative that was led by, or created by, mid-level management. The initiative will have demonstrated evidence of patient safety improvement, with involvement of staff at all levels of the organization. The recipient hospital will have demonstrated measurable, positive changes in the safety of care delivered as a result of this initiative.

“Socius” is the Latin word for “partner.” The National Patient Safety Foundation Socius Award is given in recognition of work that promotes positive and effective partnering between patients and families and providers in pursuit of improved patient safety. Such work must have at its core the recognition of the importance of patient and family centered care and the critical role that patients and families play in the development and implementation of patient safety solutions. Additionally, the work must recognize the positive contributions of providers in the creation of effective partnerships. The recipient of this year’s Socius Award is Dr. Saul Weingart.

Pfizer and the Partnership for Clear Health Communication at the National Patient Safety Foundation have announced the institution of an award to recognize health literacy work that has a direct impact on improving the safety of the health care system for the patients and families it serves.  This award, The Pfizer Health Literacy Award in Advancing Patient Safety, conferred at the National Patient Safety Foundation’s annual Congress, is presented to an individual who has made significant strides in improving the health literacy of their constituents and community through research, advocacy, and program implementation in order to improve safety and quality of care. The inaugural recipient of the award is Dr. Dean Schillinger, Director of the Center for Vulnerable Populations at the University of California San Francisco and an Associate Professor of Medicine at UCSF School of Medicine, for the work he and his group have done in health communication sciences and program design.

The National Patient Safety Foundation Chairman’s Medal is awarded in recognition of emerging leadership in the patient safety field. The award recipient has demonstrated an ability to inspire and lead the change necessary to successfully implement patient safety improvements while creating a culture of respect, openness, learning and team dynamic. We are honored to present this award to Mr. Noel Eldridge, Executive Officer of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

Experts and stakeholders from across the healthcare field will be gathering at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center for the 2008 National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) Annual Patient Safety Congress.  NPSF has been hosting this annual conference for over ten years to bring the full spectrum of stakeholders together in order to share new knowledge and tools for improving the safety of our healthcare system. Participants and presenters at Congress represent stakeholders from across the health care system and around the world, from patient and family representatives through hospital trustees and policy makers.

The Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation™ is proud to announce the appointment of two new Institute Members: James A. Guest and Paul H. O’Neill. The Institute, established by the National Patient Safety Foundation® (NPSF) in May 2007, is a think tank charged with defining strategic paths and calls to action for the field of patient safety.  Its goal is to provide vision and context for the many safety-related efforts already underway within the healthcare system and to call for system-level changes necessary to accelerate the work.  Its Founding Members include Dr. Lucian Leape, Dr. David Lawrence, Julianne Morath, Dr. Donald Berwick, Dr. Carolyn Clancy, James Conway and Dr. Dennis O’Leary, all of whom are renowned leaders in the patient safety field.

The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) Research Grants Program recently awarded two grants, representing a total of nearly $200,000, for research projects beginning in 2008. The James S. Todd Memorial Research Award was issued to a team led by Nancy Franklin, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University. The NPSF Board Grant was awarded to a group headed by Harold Kaplan, MD, Professor of Clinical Pathology and Director of Transfusion Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. The NPSF Board Grant, awarded for the first time this year, is made possible through generous support from the NPSF Board of Directors and Board of Governors.
