NPSF Announces 2011 Patient Safety Awareness Week

BOSTON, MA (March 7, 2011) – The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) is celebrating Patient Safety Awareness Week on March 6-12; this annual event is designed to highlight improved patient-provider communication as a vital part of keeping patients safe. This year, NPSF is also focusing on efforts to reduce medication errors and lower hospital readmission rates. As the nation’s leading voice for patient safety, NPSF’s goal for the campaign is to encourage improved patient care through better communication among providers, patients, families, and communities.
American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety Launched

BOSTON, Feb. 15, 2011 –Today, the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety (ASPPS), based at the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), officially launched as the first and only individual membership program for the patient safety field. The announcement was made today by Diane C. Pinakiewicz, President of both ASPPS and NPSF. A groundbreaking new program established to advance patient safety as a unique and vital health care discipline, the ASPPS was created to build an engaged, focused community of individuals committed to accelerating the delivery of safe patient care. The ASPPS makes its debut today with 175 inaugural members.
NPSF Creates First Professional Society and Certification Program for Patient Safety

BOSTON, MA (December 22, 2010) –The National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), a nonprofit specializing in advancing safe patient care, is creating a groundbreaking new membership program for patient safety professionals that will provide a unique opportunity for sharing of best practices and the unification of the growing patient safety community. New members can join the American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety at NPSF starting in January 2011.
In addition, beginning in January 2012, NPSF will launch a certification program specifically designed to standardize a curriculum and elevate the patient safety profession. Taken together with Society membership, this will provide a level of professional development for practitioners of patient safety that does not currently exist.

Riley Hospital for Children Receives NPSF Socius Award

VA Health System Leaders Recognized by Partnership for Clear Health Communication at NPSF

ORLANDO, FL, MAY 19, 2010 – The Partnership for Clear Health Communication at the National Patient Safety Foundation today announced recipients of the prestigious Pfizer Health Literacy in Advancing Patient Safety Award. Honored for their work in developing and implementing a health literacy tool targeted to the needs of the veteran patient population were Dr. Jolie Haun, from VA Health Services and the Research Center of Excellence, and Patricia Donaldson, RN, from Veteran’s Health System, Malcolm Randall VAMC.

ORLANDO, FL, May 18, 2010 – The National Patient Safety Foundation today presented the 2010 NPSF Stand Up for Patient Safety Management Award to Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.
“The Management Award is granted to a member hospital of the NPSF Stand Up for Patient Safety program in recognition of an initiative, supported by leadership at all levels and embraced by a cross-discipline team, that delivers proven, life-saving change,” said Diane C. Pinakiewicz, president of the National Patient Safety Foundation. “Virginia Mason Medical Center, for work spearheaded by their Optimizing Care Transition team, is most deserving of this recognition.”
NPSF Awards $200,000 in Grant Funding for Patient Safety Research

BOSTON, MA (MAY 11, 2010) – The National Patient Safety Foundation has awarded grants totaling $200,000 to support new research in patient safety. The grants will fund projects led by Elizabeth Cox, MD, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and by Gordon Schiff, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
