Roundtable on Restoration of Joy and Meaning in Work and Healthcare Workforce Safety
Planning is under way to address the transformational concepts of Restoration of Joy and Meaning in Work and Healthcare Workforce Safety. Discussion will focus on issues associated with the development of a safe workplace culture that creates joy and meaning for its employees, and the resultant impact of such an environment. The goal will be to close the gap between current practices and identify what habitual excellence can achieve.

Care Integration Executive Session
A Care Integration Executive Session was convened to explore the issue of why it has been so difficult to move the care delivery system to greater integration and “systemness.” Discussion included the principles around which integration should occur and whether integration was most effective when deployed organizationally or with patients as the focus. The end goal is to determine whether a more integrated delivery system leads to advances in patient safety.
Roundtable with the Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy
The Institute co-sponsored a roundtable with the Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy to discuss public policy issues that could improve patient safety.
LLI Town Hall at the 2010 NPSF Patient Safety Congress
At the 2010 NPSF Patient Safety Congress, Institute members convened the LLI Town Hall Plenary, providing attendees with an insider’s look at Institute activities, recommendations, and calls to action. A highlight of this year’s plenary was a discussion of the Institute’s recent report on medical education reform, Unmet Needs: Teaching Physicians to Provide Safe Patient Care.
“Why Not Six Sigma”
The Institute convened a group of experts to participate in the “Why Not Six Sigma” initiative, intended to better understand why even exemplar healthcare organizations seem unable to achieve performance as close to six sigma reliability as counterparts in other high-risk industries, despite the adaptation and adoption of several disciplines used effectively in those industries.
